4-7-8 Calm Breathing Exercise | 30 Minutes Custom Relaxation | Anxiety Relief | Pranayama Exercise
Enjoy the deepest relaxation and increase lung capacity with this customizable 30 minute version of the 4-7-8 breathing technique. Just practice for a length of time that works best for you (up to 30 minutes). The breaths gradually slow and extend to an ideal calming pace.
4-7-8 rhythmic breathing is a core part of many meditation and yoga practices as it promotes relaxation and can also be used to help you fall asleep in a shorter period of time. The goal is to calm your sympathetic nervous system, which controls the fight-or-flight response.
NOTE: In this video, the 4-7-8 counting does not follow seconds (the pace is purposefully slower). There are other versions of the 4-7-8 exercise on this channel that have a faster breathing pace and versions that have a slower breathing pace. You should try them all to learn what works best for you.
If you tend to be a shallow breather, it’s common to feel a little lightheaded when you start taking deeper breaths. This sensation will pass as your body becomes accustomed to a greater flow of oxygen. You can always take a short break and resume the exercise once you feel normal. It is not necessary that your timing perfectly matches the video example. You can take shorter or longer breaths as long as you maintain the ratio - Inhale 4, Hold 7, Exhale 8. Also, try to keep your expectations realistic. Some days will be easier than others, but the more often you practice, the more effective the exercise becomes.

If you are having difficulty taking a deep enough breath to complete the 4-7-8 exercise, you may wish to begin with a simple video that teaches proper abdominal breathing.

    This is probably wildly inappropriate, but I cannot help sharing: I was addicted to crack, and the sensations/buzzing in the body/mind after round five are what I would experience for the first 15 seconds after a toke. It probably goes without saying, but the breathing is a much cleaner feeling. 😅 Forever grateful for these breathing exercises. I wish everyone well on their journey. <3

    Close your lips and inhale through your nose for a count of four. Hold your breath for a count of seven. Exhale completely through your mouth making a whoosh sound for a count of eight. Do 4-7-8 breathing anytime you feel stressed. It will become more powerful as you use it. Practice doing it before you respond to an upsetting situation and whenever you're having trouble getting to sleep. Thanks so much for making this video!

      It takes a long time to cool that much water. My freezer seems to take about an hour for every degree.

    I’ve tried this breathing technique and it does not come naturally to me at all. I have to really force myself to exhale for that long and seems towards the end of the 8 seconds, I keep feeling a flutter in the right side of my chest. Can anyone suggest what the issue could be here?

      This technique is challenging for a lot of people at first. You should try the “learn abdominal breathing” video on this channel to ensure that you are taking effective breaths. Then try the beginner version of the 478 exercise on this channel. It’s easier.

    I just wanted to say, I have been doing meditation with a couple of ur vids since now 3 years ago and a bit more.     This is an amazing breathing exercise. I wouldn’t say it’s for beginners. I’ve been doing breathing exercises for many years and this has been my morning one for months now. I do it in my car before work and it really helps with my patience lol. Thanks for creating this!

      It’s not a competition -they both do the same thing.- it’s personal preference. I prefer this one myself. Box breathing is for if you don’t have a guide with you because you can use your fingers to count. Edit: okay I found this on r*ddit so it could be wrong: “Good question, 4x4 (or box breathing) balances both the side of the autonomic nervous system. The sympathetic (fight and flight) and parasympathetic (rest and digest) branches. 4-8 breathing, with a longer exhale stimulates more of the parasympathetic branch as exhales activate this. So it's more relaxing as opposed to balancing. I hope that makes sense!”

    I saw brain rewire documentary in bbc channel (UA-cam). A women did breathing meditation 30mins daily. Doctors scaned her brain before n post 6 weeks. Doctors seen significant difference in brain. The brains stuctures got changed. I.e The neural lines were changed. She felt patient before taking actions to her thoughts. She told shes thinks how to respond on every action. not blindly doing immediate response. Good video.

      Try the “learn abdominal breathing” video on this channel to ensure you’re taking deep breaths. Then try the beginner version of the 478 breathing exercise. I think that will be easier for you.

      @HandsOnMeditation no sir I will definitely look into them. But have been doing box breathing n some where I can see some relief. I do it for 15 minutes n I rewind it again twice.
